Improve your video files before uploading them to the OnSign TV platform. Reduce the file size and save valuable storage space or change the file specifications if they are out of bounds.
In particular, the video codec profile is an important aspect to watch out for. There are multiple profiles for H.264. We recommend the Main or Baseline profiles. The High profile is often too heavy for the decoder to process.
Frame rate is another marker to keep an eye out for. Many devices can't handle a frame rate of 60fps.
When encoding the video, we recommend making it Web Optimized, making it faster to load.
We recommend converting videos with Handbrake, a free software available for Mac, Windows, and Linux, but of course you are free to use any video optimizer of your choosing:
- Download and install the specific Handbrake version for your computer’s operating system.
- Once downloaded, launch the program. It might seem complex at first, but we only need to focus on a few settings.
- Select the file you want to convert from Open Source.
- In the tab "Summary" select “MP4” as “Format” and check mark “Web Optimized”.
- In the “Video” tab, choose "H.264" as “Video Codec”.
- In the same “Video” tab select the profile “MAIN” or “BASELINE”.
- At the bottom you will see a text field “Save As” where you can rename the file. The current name is the suggested name. Next to it you have the option to browse which folder on your computer you want the new file to be saved in.
- Click on the green "Start" button in the header. Depending on your computer and the file size, it may take a while. You can accompany the progress of the conversion in the bar below.
- If the output file format is M4V, change the file extension to MP4 to be able to upload the file to your OnSign TV web account.
