Setting Interactivity Timeout

With interactive content, such as forms, websites, menus, or maps, you can't know how long people will take to explore it.

In such a case it is better to publish longer Campaigns and set a Timeout on the Interactivity. The OnSign Player will detected when no one has interacted with the Content for a set period of time and trigger another Content automatically.

This is useful when displays are at high traffic areas. This way the next person interacting with the screen will start at the beginning.

For this tutorial, we set up a Wayfinding Campaign for a university. Visitors see the campus map and can click on departments to check out indoor maps. Our goal is to set up an Interactivity Timeout on department maps, so when no one is checking them out, the screen goes back to the campus map.

If you want to set up a timeout, you likely have already learned how to create interactive Campaigns in the first place.

Previously, we have accessed the Triggers and Interactivity menu by first opening a Campaign. For fun and to show you little productivity improvements on the side, let's start with a shortcut to the Triggers and Interactivity menu of a Campaign when you have not yet opened the Campaign.

  1. In your OnSign account, right-click on the interactive Campaign of the department map where you want to set the Timeout.
  2. Select "Triggers and Interactivity" from the pop-up menu.

  3. This directly sends you to the Campaign's Triggers and Interactivity menu. Click on “Add Trigger” in the top right.

  4. For When, select "Interactivity timeout".
    choose interactivity timeout
  5. Adjust how many seconds should pass without any interaction before OnSign triggers other Content. We choose 45 seconds.

  6. For Action, select what will play if there is no interaction. You can trigger another Campaign, Playlist, an image, video, Composition or App. We select the Campaign with the general campus map.
    play campus campaign
  7. At last, click on the check mark to the right.

Done! The outcome is, whenever there is no interaction with the department map for 45s, the campus map will be triggered.
