Using Audio Ducking

The Audio Loop requires Player version 10 or above.

This tutorial discusses the lowering of volume when a new, more important audio is temporarily introduced while another is still playing. To learn how to use audio files, please visit the using audio files tutorial.

Audio Ducking is a well-known feature to audio editors. Audio Ducking will lower, or “duck”, the volume of the media which are being played, allowing a new audio message to be heard. Once the message is finished, the volume of the previous audio is automatically resumed.

For example, if you have an audio announcement to kick in in the middle of a Campaign, you can adjust the volume of others to a lower percent or even 0%. During the announcement the other volume levels will be reduced and after the announcement is done the main content is returned to the original level.

Audio Ducking can be configured for each element which has a volume selector.

Note: Ducked medias whose volume is changed by the player application, called Volume Others on the platform, can only be audio or video published directly to the device, on its own, inside a Playlist or a Campaign. Content in a composition cannot be ducked for the time being. Duckers, the ones controlling the volume of others, can be anything.

Two different volume levels have to be set:

  • Volume – This is the playback volume for the media at hand.
  • Volume Others – This is the volume set for all other media playing in the background.

Audio ducking is especially handy for on-demand audio playback. On-demand playback is only available with Pro plan or higher.

  1. Publish any audio asset as on-demand directly to a Player, no Playlist or Campaign necessary.
    publish audio file
  2. Publish as On-Demand.
    publish on-demand
  3. Go to the Player where the on-demand audio is published. Click on the little gear icon on the right of the on-demand audio content.
    open audio configuration
  4. Select the desired Volume for this media and the Volume Others.
    lower volume others
  5. If you want you can also set an audio cross-fade. This will make the transition more gradual.
