Supported file types and recommended formats

OnSign supports a wide range of file formats, making it easy to publish different types of content across your digital signage network.

That said, OnSign does not re-encode or modify your files when delivering them to players. For this reason, it is essential to ensure that the format and parameters of your content are compatible with your target players.

For the widest compatibility, we recommend :

  • H.264 codec
  • Bitrate up to 10 Mbps
  • 30 FPS
  • Pixel format(Color encoding) - yuv420p
  • Encoding Profile:
    • Baseline profile for devices released before 2020
    • Main or high profile for players launched after 2020

Always remember to check the file types supported by your player device manufacturer.

You can upload the following supported files to your OnSign account:

Category Supported Formats
Images JPG, JPEG, PNG, APNG, GIF
Videos MKV, AVI, MP4, MPG, MPEG, WebM
Fonts TTF, OTF, WOFF
Web Assets HTML, CSS, JS
Others PDF, ZIP

The platform allows you to upload all of these file types; however, the final determining factor is whether your hardware supports them. For more details, refer to the file specifications documentation. If you are using a BrightSign device, see the related article for device-specific information.

You can upload PDF files as well as ZIP files containing multiple media assets. In these cases, a folder is automatically created containing all individual PDF pages or the files included in the ZIP archive.

If you attempt to upload an unsupported file to the OnSign platform, a notification will appear at the bottom of the Content page with a yellow warning icon. Hovering over this icon will display the message “file extension not supported”.
