Public or unattended deployments often need to keep a device locked to the OnSign Player, without users accidentally closing it or reaching the desktop. On Windows, Kiosk Mode is configured entirely from your Dashboard, no additional software is required. Unlike Android, Windows and Linux don't use the SPM, that component only exists for Android devices.
How It Works
Kiosk Mode is available on OnSign Player version 10.0.11 and above. It's controlled by the Lock password field in the device's Player settings, setting a password disables the right mouse-click and context menu.
Note: In the strictest sense, Windows does not have a full kiosk mode yet. This is the current solution while more complete kiosk options for Windows are in development. Once a user has access to the taskbar or a keyboard, they can still exit the app (for example, by opening Task Manager and ending the OnSign process). This is a known limitation, not a bug. On touchscreen-only devices running fullscreen, the Lock password alone is enough to prevent users from exiting.
Enabling Kiosk Mode
- On your Dashboard, open the Players tab and select the target Player.
- Scroll to the Lock password field and set a password.
- Save the changes to activate Kiosk Mode.
Exiting Kiosk Mode
To exit the Player app, click 7 times in the lower-left corner of the screen, then enter the Lock password when prompted.
Troubleshooting
- A user can still close the app through Task Manager. Likely cause: once the taskbar is reachable, Windows allows ending any process, including OnSign. Resolution: this is a known limitation of the current Windows kiosk solution, not a misconfiguration, restrict taskbar access at the OS level if this is a concern.
- Right-click and the context menu still appear. Likely cause: no Lock password was saved in the Player settings. Resolution: set a Lock password on the Dashboard and save the changes.
- Clicking 7 times doesn't exit the app. Likely cause: clicking the wrong corner, or the Player app is older than version 10.0.11. Resolution: click specifically in the lower-right corner, and confirm the Player app is on version 10.0.11 or later.
