Enabling Virtual Keyboard on Windows Touch Screens

In interactive digital signage deployments that use touch screens, Windows may not automatically display its built-in virtual keyboard when no physical keyboard is connected. Configuring this setting ensures that the keyboard appears whenever a user selects a text input field.

Windows 10

  1. Open the Start menu and select Settings.
  2. Navigate to Devices > Typing.
  3. Under the Touch Keyboard section, enable "Show the touch keyboard when not in tablet mode and there's no keyboard attached."

Windows 11

  1. Open the Start menu and select Settings.
  2. Navigate to Time & Language > Typing.
  3. Expand the Touch Keyboard section.
  4. In the Show the touch keyboard setting, select Always.

Once configured, the virtual keyboard will automatically appear whenever a user interacts with a text field, improving the experience on touch-enabled digital signage installations.

Note: This is an operating system setting, not an OnSign player setting. It must be applied directly on the device or via Group Policy (GPO) in managed deployments.
