Public or unattended deployments often need to keep a device locked to the OnSign Player, without users accidentally closing it or reaching the desktop. On Linux, Kiosk Mode is configured entirely from your Dashboard, no additional software is required. Unlike Android, Linux and Windows don't use the SPM, that component only exists for Android devices.
How It Works
Kiosk Mode is available on OnSign Player version 10.0.11 and above. It's controlled by the Lock password field in the device's Player settings, setting a password disables the right-click and context menu.
Note: If the device has keyboard access, a user can still exit the app using the keyboard. On touchscreen-only devices running fullscreen, the Lock password alone is enough to prevent users from exiting.
Enabling Kiosk Mode
- On your Dashboard, open the Players tab and select the target Player.
- Scroll to the Lock password field and set a password.
- Save the changes to activate Kiosk Mode.
Exiting Kiosk Mode
To exit the Player app, click 7 times in the lower-right corner of the screen, then enter the Lock password when prompted.
Troubleshooting
- Right-click and the context menu still appear. Likely cause: no Lock password was saved in the Player settings. Resolution: set a Lock password on the Dashboard and save the changes.
- Clicking 7 times doesn't exit the app. Likely cause: clicking the wrong corner, or the Player app is older than version 10.0.11. Resolution: click specifically in the lower-right corner, and confirm the Player app is on version 10.0.11 or later.
- A user can still access the desktop or other applications. Likely cause: the window manager or desktop environment allows switching away from the Player app. Resolution: this depends on the Linux distribution and desktop environment in use, restrict window switching at the OS level if this is a concern.
