Installing OnSign manually on each BrightSign Player requires physical access to the device and does not scale well across networks with multiple units. BrightSign Control (formerly BSN.cloud) is BrightSign’s free service for remote provisioning and management, and it lets the Player download and install OnSign automatically as soon as it is registered to your account. This is the preferred installation method for BrightSign Players.
How It Works
Provisioning a Player means two things: registering it to your BrightSign Control network and assigning it a Setup File. The Setup File defines what the Player does at startup. For the Player to install OnSign, the Setup File must use the partner application Publishing Mode, with OnSign selected.
You create the Setup File in BrightSign Author, BrightSign’s free desktop application, and add it to your account’s Setup File library. It then appears in BrightSign Control under Player Setup > Setup File Library.
When you register a Player without assigning a specific Setup File, BrightSign automatically applies the Setup File named Default Setup. If this file does not exist on your network, BrightSign applies its own default, which does not install OnSign. This makes the Setup File name the most important detail of the entire process.
BSN Cloud Control is a free service provided by BrightSign to help with deployment and remote Player management. This is the preferred installation method for BrightSign Players.
Using the BSN.cloud in combination with OnSign you can:
- Install the OnSign Player App on BrightSign devices remotely.
- Remotely update the BrightSign Player Firmware.
- Get remote Player screenshots. You can even see the OnSign paring code before getting the Player connected to OnSign.
- Remotely reboot the Player.
- Remotely factory reset the Player while maintaining the OnSign Player installed.
- Remotely format the SD card.
- Remotely test and change network settings.
- Get additional debugging logs, including the option to browse SD Card files.
Before moving forward, make sure:
- The Player network is configured and connected to the internet either through ethernet or Wifi.
- The BrightSign Player is running firmware 8.4.14 or newer.
- If you have both of the above set, the Player will display the BSN.cloud activation code directly after booting.
- In case you don’t get the activation code, you can try a factory reset before starting the process.
Configuration Steps
Step 1: Create the OnSign Setup File in BrightSign Author
- If you do not have BrightSign Author yet, go to https://www.brightsign.biz/resources/software-downloads/, download BrightSign Author, and install it on your computer.

- Open BrightSign Author and click Connect to BSN.Cloud in the upper-right corner. If you do not have a BrightSign account yet, click New User to create one. Use this same account in BrightSign Control in Step 2.

- Go to Admin > Setup.
- In Setup Name, type Default Setup, with this exact spelling and capitalization.
- In Player Name, enter the default name that Players provisioned with this Setup File will receive.
- In Partner App select the OnSign app from the list.

- Now click on Add Setup File To Library.
It is VERY important to name the package “Default Setup”, so all new devices will be created using these settings. Otherwise, you will later have to go to your provided devices and apply the OnSign device setup profile to your connected BSN.cloud Players. If your network already has a Setup File named Default Setup with another Publishing Mode (for example, lfn), new Players will receive that file and will not install OnSign. Edit that Setup File to use OnSign, or rename it before creating the new one.
Step 2: Access BrightSign Control and Confirm the Setup File
- Go to https://bsn.cloud.
- On the BrightSign Control card (Free Device Management), click Already have an account? Log In.

- On the sign-in screen, enter the Username of the same account you used in BrightSign Author and click Sign In.

- In BrightSign Control, go to Player Setup > Provisioning. You can register the Player by its Serial Number or by the Pairing Code shown on screen.

Option A: By serial number
- Click Add Player.
- In Serial Number, enter the Player’s serial number (alphanumeric characters only). The Player Name and Description fields are optional.
- Click Add Player.

Option B: By registration code
- Turn on the Player. A Player that has not been provisioned displays a registration code on screen.
- Click Register with Code, enter the code shown on screen, and confirm.

- Once you press the submit button, the Player will start to download and install the OnSign software. Just wait until the Player finishes the process. No need to worry when the device will go through several reboots and the whole process takes a couple of minutes.
If you can’t see the activation code on your screen, please make sure:
- You are running firmware 8.4.14 or newer.
- Make sure your Player is connected to the internet.
- Consider formatting the SD card to ensure nothing is running on the Player and factory reset the device.
Troubleshooting
- The Setup File does not appear in BrightSign Control: BrightSign Author and BrightSign Control are probably connected to different accounts or networks, or the Setup File was saved without using Add Setup to Library. Confirm that you are using the same account and network in both, then open the Setup File in BrightSign Author and click Add Setup to Library.
- The Player does not display the registration code: The Player may be running BrightSignOS earlier than 8.4.14, may have no internet connection, or may already have a provisioning record. Check the BrightSignOS version and the network connection. If the problem persists, format the microSD card and factory reset the Player.
- The Player was registered but did not install OnSign: There is no Setup File named Default Setup on the network, or it uses another Publishing Mode. In Player Setup > Setup File Library, check the name and Publishing Mode of Default Setup, fix the Setup File in BrightSign Author, and reprovision the Player.
- The Player did not change after receiving a new Setup File: Assigning a new Setup File to a Player that was already provisioned is not enough to activate it. Reprovision the Player so it applies the new Setup File.
- The installation does not finish: The microSD card is not empty or uses an unsupported format. Format the card as FAT32 or exFAT and restart the Player.
- You cannot add the Player by serial number: The Player is still provisioned on another BrightSign Control account’s network. Ask the administrator of the previous account to delete the Player’s provisioning record, then add the Player again.
